And check out the BOARD THE BUS news item for more information about how Seekers are motivated and rewarded for participation in extracurricular activities. Thanks to all our staff and community volunteers that make these opportunities possible!
School Safety Information Safety Information

Student Safety is Always our First Priority!

We pride ourselves at Hyde Park as having the most awesome students ever, however, sometimes students are on their way to learning how to behave in a more socially acceptable manner. We all make mistakes, and learning from our mistakes is key to our success. At Hyde Park, we have a team of staff members who are well trained in responding to student behaviour that escalates to a point of putting others at risk. When this happens in our building, classroom teachers will be asked, via our Public Announcement system to ensure classroom doors are closed and locked. Students would continue learning. Outside the classroom, our BMS team (behaviour management systems team) will be called to assist this student in calming. In extreme cases, when student behaviour escalates to the point of harming others or self, this team is trained to safely contain the student. Sometimes other students may witness this. They are later debriefed back in classrooms so that they can better understand the nature of this type of staff response. To preserve the dignity and privacy of students and families, we will NOT be sending notification home each time this occurs (it is extremely rare). We know our community is compassionate and understanding of this.

Our next step to bring parents on board to further increase our circle of support. To facilitate this, the School Council will be EXTENDING this BOARD THE BUS event after school to include ALL PARENTS & their CHILDREN (regardless if they received the participation points this term). Our School Council and Staff are hopeful that by visiting our gym event after school hours—these students might have re-newed inspiration to do what it takes to be included in our JUNE Board the Bus date! Visual displays will further parents' understanding of student opportunities in leadership, teams and clubs (thanks to our council members, staff & students for pulling this together!)

This is what our Board the Bus day looks like:

9:10-10 - Kindergarten students

10-10:50 - classes of: Case, Gill, Auger, Doherty, Millar, Vasquez

11:30-12:20— classes of: Convey, Plesh

12:20-1:10— classes of: Snyder, Michaels, Michie, LeBlanc

1:50-2:40—classes of: Ballantyne, Nelson, Skazin, Coleman, Cass, Kirwan

2:40-3:20— classes of: McRae & Elrick

3:20-4:30—Seeker Staff & School Council Members (adults only)

4:30-6:30 All Parents & their children!!!!!

School Climate SurveySchool Climate Survey
Dear Parent/Guardian,

One of the goals in the Simcoe County District School Board improvement plan is to provide a safe, supportive learning environment that supports all students in being successful. In January, all students in grades 4 to 8 will be asked to complete an anonymous, on-line survey at school about how they feel about their school. Your child's teacher will supervise the class during the survey and can answer any questions or concerns your child may have.

This year, parents/guardians of students in grades 4 to 8 will also be asked to complete an anonymous on-line survey about how they feel about their child's school.

These surveys provide students, parent/guardians and staff with the opportunity to say what is great about their school, as well as express their concerns. The survey results will provide valuable feedback to staff and will help schools to develop their Safe Schools Plans.

Students, parents/guardians and staff will not be asked to provide their names and all responses will be combined to ensure confidentiality.

Questions on the surveys cover a range of topics, such as:

the overall tone of the school, often referred to as school climate;

perceptions of peers in terms of the Board's 10 Character traits;

involvement in extracurricular activities and academic achievement;

experiences of school safety and bullying;

equity and inclusion practices within the school;

school responses to instances of student wrongdoing; and

3 questions to assist the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit in their Healthy Schools Initiative.

Student Survey

Should you wish to review the student survey, a sample version is available here . A paper copy of the student survey is also available at the school office. Please call the school if you have questions about how the student survey will be implemented in your child's school.

Parent/Guardian Survey

To complete the parent/guardian survey, please go to the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) website () and click the link to the parent/guardian School Climate survey. The password for the parent/guardian survey is ElementaryParent2017. If you do not have access to the internet and/or you prefer to complete a paper version of the survey, copies of the parent/guardian survey are available at the school office. Questions about how to access the survey can be directed to SCDSB's Research and Evaluation Services team

The information that is collected will be used to help guide our school in creating and maintaining safe, supportive learning environments for all students. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Kathy Whitley
Principal, Hyde Park Public School
